Of course! At Teen Clinic, each visit is centered around the care you request. It’s Your Health! We’ll never ask you to do anything you’re not comfortable with.
More importantly, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has released new guidelines stating that breast and pelvic exams are not necessary in women under the age of 19 unless they are experiencing problems. Pap tests–previously given to teens–are now recommended only for women over the age of 21. So tell your mom she can let out a sigh of relief: refusing the exam won’t negatively affect your health.
Sometimes our nurse practitioners will give Teen Clinic patients under 19 a pelvic exam if they are interested in using an intra-uterine device, or IUD, as their birth control method. Getting a pelvic exam helps prepare a teen for the IUD procedure. It also helps the nurse determine whether or not the teen is a good candidate for IUDs. Call Teen Clinic for a free IUD consultation.
If you’re not interested in IUDs and you don’t develop an infection… success! It won’t be medically necessary to get a pelvic exam until you’re nineteen.
