I’ve been bleeding on and off since I began birth control 3 weeks ago…

…I’ve messed up taking it at the same time each day. Could that be the reason? If not, what’s causing it?

Your body might be taking it’s time getting used to the new birth control method. Many women beginning hormonal birth control experience “spotting” or light bleeding. It generally takes three months for your body to get used to the hormones. If you are still experiencing spotting after three months, make an appointment with your doctor or at Teen Clinic to find a method that works better with your body. Taking a pill closer to the same time everyday will reduce spotting. It will also ensure that you are protected against pregnancy.  If you don’t get your period this month, take a pregnancy test. There are other birth control methods that you don’t have to remember everyday. Some you don’t have to think about for years! Check our Birth Control & Prevention page for information on other options.
