A female condom is a soft pouch–often made of polyurethane, nitrile, or latex–which is inserted into the vagina or anus. Flexible rings at each end hold the pouch in place. The inner ring stays inside the vagina while the outer ring stays outside over the vulva. If used in the anus, remove the inner ring and insert the condom gently with a finger. Be sure the outer ring stays outside the anus at all times.
Female condoms are much like male condoms: they should only be used once, and they can prevent against both STIs and pregnancy. Unlike male condoms, they can be inserted up to eight hours before intercourse! However, they are a little harder to find. We do have them at Teen Clinic, so if you’re interested, come on over!
