Starting January 1, 2012, Teen Clinic’s hours will be changing slightly. We will now be open:

Boulder:

Mondays 4-6 (walk-in hours)
Tuesdays 4-7 (appointments & walk-ins)
Saturdays 1-5 (appointments & walk-ins)

Longmont:

Mondays 4-6 (appointments & walk-ins)
Tuesdays 2-6 (walk-in hours)
Wednesdays 2-6 (appointments & walk-ins)

Please note! Teen Clinic will be closed 12/24, 12/26, and 1/2. On New Year’s Eve, we will be open from 1-5. Please plan ahead if you will need to pick up birth control during these dates.

Despite FDA nod, Plan B will still require prescription under 17

Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration released guidelines approving the sale of Plan B (the emergency contraception pill) over the counter, making it available to all sexually active women without a prescription.

Then on December 7, the Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius overruled the FDA guidelines, stating concerns about the ability of younger women to correctly use the contraceptive. The result? Those under 17 will still need a prescription to access Plan B–and sexually active consumers of any age will need to show an ID before they can purchase the pill.

At Teen Clinic, Plan B is still free to anyone under 20. We can write prescriptions for those under 17. We also dispense to males.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Education (CDPHE) is in the process of developing a Statewide Youth Sexual Health Plan. The goal of the Plan is to effectively guide state and local communities in the improvement of youth sexual health, and will include strategies on how to decrease unintended teen birth and STI/HIV rates, and to expand on positive approaches to youth development and health.

Colorado Youth Matter and the Healthy Colorado Youth Alliance are gathering input from communities around the state. Share your experiences! All you have to do is take this survey.

It will take about 5-10 minutes to complete, and you will have the option to enter a drawing for a $50 VISA gift card upon completion of the survey.

The Patch should remain available despite health risks, says FDA

A panel of federal health advisers met on Friday to review the safety of the birth control patch. The patch– known as OrthoEvra and manufactured by Johnson & Johnson– is thought to carry a higher risk of blood clots than other hormonal birth control methods. However, the federal panel ruled that its benefits outweigh its risks, and suggested it remain available as an option for females who have trouble taking a daily pill.

Tickets are now available for the annual Boulder Valley Women’s Health fundraiser! This year, we’re bringing back the Broads– Broad Comedy, the hilarious, political, all-woman comedy troupe that had us all falling out of our seats last year! The doors open at 7:30pm on October 22 for general admission and at 6:00pm for a VIP reception. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the Boulder Theatre; general seating is just $30.

This is a great way to support Teen Clinic, our free education services, and all the other great programs Women’s Health offers throughout the community!

New study: IUDs may protect against cervical cancer

Intrauterine devices may reduce the risk of cervical cancer by 45%, states a recent New York Times article. The new information comes out of a review of studies conducted in Asia, South America, and Europe between 1985 and 2007. Researchers believe that inserting an IUD may create an immune response that helps the body fight off HPV.
