What is SHAPE?

SHAPE was founded in 2002 as a youth-directed peer education program focused on educating youth about HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and contraception.  SHAPE is a collaboration between Women’s Health and the Boulder County AIDS Project (BCAP).

What will I do in SHAPE?
SHAPE is really different from many other volunteer positions because what you do as a SHAPE member do is really up to you.  Sure, each peer educator will:

  • attend a fun training,

  • learn about HIV and STIs,

  • offer their opinions and ideas and

  • act as a resource for other youth in the community

. . . but exactly HOW you and the other SHAPE members decide to reach other teens is up to the group. Your talents and interests will affect the program and help guide it. Maybe the SHAPE group will provide street outreach to youth on the Pearl Street mall, work on a website, at a health fair, or stage a “Health Night” at a local Teen Center. The adults in the program are here to help you reach your goals. It is really up to you.

What will I get out of SHAPE?
Being a member of SHAPE will allow you to become an expert on sexual health issues, provide you with leadership skills, and supply an outlet to make a positive change in youth in Boulder County.  You will also have fun while participating in outreach activities and being the source of information for your friends!

Who can be in SHAPE?
High-school aged youth who are interested in preventing HIV and STIs, helping teens make positive decisions about their sexuality, and working with other youth in a collaborative atmosphere are encouraged to apply.

How do I apply?
Applications for the 2008-09 school year are due by April 2, 2008. You can request an application by email (blair@bvwhc.org) or by calling Blair, Youth Services Director at Women's Health, at (303) 440-9320, ext. 36. Once we receive your application, we will call you to set up an interview.
