Phexxi Contraceptive Gel
Phexxi is a non-hormonal contraceptive gel similar to spermicide, except that it's used in the vagina.
How it's used
Phexxi is placed in the vagina before sex using a pre-filled applicator, kind of like using a tampon. One full applicator is used each time you have vaginal sex (penis-in-vagina intercourse). Phexxi can be inserted into the vagina up to an hour before you have sex, and it's formulated to stay in place in the vagina during sex. It must be inserted BEFORE sex; it will not work if used after sex.
Phexxi should not be used with a NuvaRing, but it can be used with other birth control methods such as the pill or the DepoProvera shot. You can also use it in combination with a diaphragm. You shouldn't use Phexxi if you've had a lot of UTIs or other urinary tract problems.
How well does it work?
Phexxi is 93% effective at preventing pregnancy if used perfectly every time. But because of human error, it's about 86% effective on average.
