Is Plan B an abortion pill?

No! This is a common misconception. Plan B would do nothing if sperm had already fertilized an egg. Plan B is actually really similar to regular birth control pills: it prevents ovulation from happening. However, you're not meant to take Plan B regularly because it contains a high dose of hormones and can have unpleasant side effects. These include nausea, a delayed period, breast tenderness, and some spotting/irregular bleeding for a few days.

Remember, the sooner you take Plan B (or similar brands) the better it works. But you can take it up to three days after unprotected sex and it can still be effective.

My boyfriend came inside me without a condom but I have the Nexplanon. Do I need to get Plan B?

No. You are over 99% protected from pregnancy with the Nexplanon alone, even if your partner ejaculates inside you. The only exception would be if you just got your Nexplanon and haven't waited the full 7 days before having sex. Those first 7 days are when your body is adapting to the hormones and the implant isn't as effective at pregnancy prevention.

What if I can't take hormones but I need emergency contraception?

One thing you could consider is getting a Paragard IUD. This IUD is non-hormonal (it uses copper instead) and because of copper's effects on sperm, it has proven to be an extremely effective form of emergency contraception if the IUD is inserted within the first 5 days after unprotected sex. Plus, then you have a long-acting form of birth control and can leave it in for up to 10 years if you want!

If I already ovulated, will Plan B work?

No, it will not. However, it's really hard to know for sure whether you've ovulated; it's not something you can see or feel. So it's often a good idea to try taking Plan B anyway.

Do I need a parent to come with me if I pick up Plan B at Teen Clinic?

Nope! It is totally confidential and parental permission is NOT required. You don't even have to make an appointment. We offer Plan B for free if you're under 18 and have ever been seen by a provider at Teen Clinic. If you're under 18 and have never had an appointment at Teen Clinic, it's around $20.
